Simon Occulis

Occulis was born in Los Angeles California. His teenage years were spent in a US Manhattan Project town, Richland Washington, where the military made the plutonium for the Nagasaki bomb, and his high school mascot was the mushroom cloud. After flunking out of school resulting from dyslexia, he embarked upon a long list of factotum occupations like, arctic fisherman, coffee roaster, radio jingle producer, and single parent, to name a few. It was while squatting inside an abandoned church on the Humber River in Toronto, attempting to overcome his learning-disabilities that he stumbled upon the hypnogogic artistic process that propelled him to success with poetry, a surreal experience he has described as, “the spirit possessing him.”  After a best-selling collection, Tender in the Age of Fury, and two international recital tours, Pitts changed his name to Simon Occulis, released a novel, the Gospel of Now, and channeled his artistic practice into oil painting, amalgamating influences from pop art, German expressionism, and techniques reminiscent of old masters.

Occulis now lives and works in Montreal, Canada.  

Poète, romancier et artiste visuel canado-américain, Simon Occulis est né à Los Angeles, en Californie. Son adolescence s'est déroulée dans une ville du projet Manhattan, Richland Washington, où l'armée fabriquait le plutonium pour la bombe de Nagasaki et où la mascotte de son école secondaire était le champignon atomique. Après avoir échoué à l'école pour cause de dyslexie, il s'est lancé dans une suite d'occupations variées : pêcheur dans l'Arctique, torréfacteur, producteur de jingles pour la radio et parent célibataire, pour n'en citer que quelques-unes. C'est en squattant une église abandonnée sur la rivière Humber à Toronto, alors qu'il tentait de surmonter ses difficultés d'apprentissage, qu'il est tombé sur le processus artistique hypnogique qui l'a propulsé vers le succès en poésie, une expérience surréaliste qu'il a décrite comme "l'esprit qui le possédait".  Après un best-seller, Tender in the Age of Fury, et deux tournées internationales de récitals, Pitts change son nom en Simon Occulis, publie un roman, The Gospel of Now, et oriente sa pratique artistique vers la peinture à l'huile, amalgamant des influences du pop art, de l'expressionnisme allemand et des techniques rappelant les anciens maîtres. 

Occulis vit et travaille aujourd'hui à Montréal, au Canada.
